How To Use
Clear the bed or border of weeds and give the soil a light watering if it’s dry, then spread the chipped bark evenly over the surface, leaving a small gap around the base of plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot. A generous, even layer will do the best job of suppressing weeds and retaining moisture, so top up any thin patches as needed. Bark can be applied at most times of year, though spring and autumn tend to be the easiest times to work the soil.
Tips & Advice
For the best weed control, lay the bark over soil that’s already reasonably weed-free rather than relying on it to smother established growth, and consider laying a weed-suppressant membrane underneath in particularly problem areas. Because bark breaks down gradually, expect to top it up every year or two to keep borders looking neat and to maintain its weed-suppressing effect; this also gives the added benefit of steadily enriching the soil beneath as it decomposes.
